We all know self-care is trendy and that many people talk about it. But in a time when injustice, death, grief, illness and murder are all around us, what place does self-care really have? Is it even too trivial to say it outloud? Or maybe it’s too light and fluffy for such a serious and sad time?
At Self+Centered, we are reclaiming self-care as a radical act.
We assert that in times like these that self-care is:
Self+Care is Essential for survival in a culture that pushes / forces us away from the space for this type of devotion
We are inundated with things to look at, things to distract us, things to think about, things to cry about and definitely things to be outraged about. And before the pandemic the idea of taking a pause seemed like a dream / maybe a fantasy that was just out of reach or maybe too idyllic to really go after. And then the world shut down (or at least our world did) and we started to see that sitting down and sitting still had its pros and cons. And even in a Pandemic there were those among us who insisted there was no time to stop, to pause or to reflect. That we must get back to work. Well we at Self+Centered assert that while working is an important function, resting, reflecting and reuniting with the community are also necessary features of our humanity that we have gotten away from in our society.
Self+Care is non-negotiable in a world where trauma, exhaustion and fatigue are common side effects of work
The idea of self-care may be counter to what you know about self-care to date, or to who you think self-care is for. But we assert that self-care or the Loving attention to one's body, mind, spirit and emotional life coupled with appropriate action and community is essential during these hectic times. And is particularly critical for black people
Self+Care is our access to creativity, fulfillment, effectiveness and ease in working with others
We are committed to creating the inspiring spaces, conversations & community for self-care in our communities. Self-care that brings out the vibrancy and creativity of our community. Self-care that gives us access to fulfillment, effectiveness and ease in working with others. What doesn’t work for us is a world where people like struggle and suffer. We are committed to the thriving of our communities and our people. And that looks like taking back ever bit of our power. It looks like us celebrating ourselves and one another in community. It looks like us healing and helping one another in community and it looks like us being vulnerable and accountable in community. Our Self+Centered programs take this step in supporting people who care for others in obvious and less obvious ways as DEI leaders and team.
At Self+Centered, we are reclaiming self-care as a radical act.
Understanding self+care and it’s importance in your daily routine begins with you.
